Barefoot Basics
What is a barefoot shoe and how are they different from normal shoes?
Barefoot shoes are designed to be 'foot shaped' and not 'shoe shaped'. Barefoot shoes are designed to be ergonomic and enable natural movement. Typically, barefoot shoes have wide toe boxes for your toes to splay, are flexible to enable free movement, and have minimal support and zero heel drop so your feet can learn to strengthen itself in response to your lifestyle.
What are the benefits of going barefoot and are they proven?
Science suggests that barefoot shoes are an effective way to strengthen your feet for long-term wellness! There is a wealth of resources available online and the research is only strengthening. We suggest you do your own research and a quick google search will quickly send you down a rabbit hole. Ultimately, seeing is believing and we welcome you to try using the shoes for yourself to determine if they are a good fit for your goals.
How do I transition to using barefoot shoes after a life of cushioned footwear?
Most people have been conditioned to be 'heel strikers' by most shoes on the market due to existing arch support systems in shoes. When transitioning to barefoot shoes, you will want to slowly break-in your usage of barefoot footwear over 6 months because you will need to re-learn how to distribute your weight over the entire foot. We recommend starting with just 30-minutes of active walking daily and gradually increasing the range of activities as you become more comfortable. Visit our "Learn" page for more detailed resources to navigate your barefoot journey.
Is going barefoot for everyone, especially if I have foot pain?
It's great that you asked! At the end, we are not medical professionals and you know your body best. It's been recommended by many physical therapists that barefoot shoes are part of rehabilitation journeys but this is on a case-by-case basis. We suggest you consult your medical provider to determine if going barefoot is a good fit for your particular condition.
